1 Thessalonians 5 vs 16-18
“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
A common complaint we often have, is that of purpose. We seek and search for the meaning behind what we are doing, continually asking what it is that God wants us to be doing.
When I was waiting for my husband I often used to think how much easier life would be, if the Lord would have told me who my husband was and when I was going to meet him.
When I was at school I often used to think how much easier my career choice would be, if I had come out of the womb with a little tag saying my future profession.
Of course, with both these examples, over time God made His will known to me so clearly that I had no doubt about who I was to marry and where I was to work. But in that season of waiting it seemed that I prayed over and over for Him to reveal His will to me.
Which is why I love this verse. No matter the questions my heart may be asking on a particular day or in a particular season, I will always know these three things which are His will for me.
- His will is for me to be joyful, which implies that if I am not joyful, if I am choosing to be grumpy and untrusting, then I am stepping outside of His will. And He has faithfully promised that in His Presence is fullness of joy, so if I am not feeling joyful I only have to spend time with Him for that to change.
- Pray Continually. His will is for me to be in continuous conversation with Him. To not leave Him in the room where I have my quiet time, but to walk each day side by side with Him.
- Give thanks in all circumstances. His will is for me not to focus on the negative, but to trust Him enough to be thankful for every circumstance.
