Trust and Obey

I read a passage this morning in Zephaniah that was speaking of Jerusalem:

Zephaniah 3 vs 2

“She obeys no one, she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the Lord, she does not draw near to her God.”

Four simple steps that allowed Jerusalem to be described as rebellious:

  1. Obedient to no one
  2. Refusing to accept when in the wrong
  3. No trust in God
  4. Not drawing near to God

The opposite of rebellious is happy and obedient. How closely these two things are linked, happiness and obedience. I cannot be happy unless I am being obedient and obeying what God has commanded. And to obey God is to trust Him, draw near to Him and be willing to change when corrected.

I often have the old chorus playing in my mind when I know God is calling me to do something:

“Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

May I take time today to listen to that small still voice and trust and obey.
